Description
Oversized Swedish Modern Figured Rosewood Wastebasket, Sweden, circa 1960s
Martin Ã…berg for Servex, Sweden
A rare oversized Swedish Modern wastebasket executed in dramatically figured rosewood veneer, Sweden, circa 1960s. Constructed using laminated bentwood techniques, the tapered cylindrical form is fully veneered both inside and out, showcasing continuous vertical grain with exceptional contrast and movement throughout.
Unlike standard period wastebaskets, this example possesses an unusually large scale and strong architectural presence, measuring nearly nineteen inches high with a broad 13.75 inch opening. The proportions elevate the form beyond a simple utilitarian object, allowing it to function equally well as a sculptural floor vessel, umbrella stand, or planter cachepot within refined interiors.
The richly figured rosewood displays pronounced tonal variation ranging from deep espresso to warm amber hues, with highly active grain patterns characteristic of luxury Scandinavian cabinetry and accessories produced during the height of mid-century modern design. The seamless bentwood construction and fully finished interior indicate higher-end manufacture, uncommon for office accessories of the period.
Its restrained silhouette and material-driven aesthetic pair naturally with Scandinavian Modern, Hollywood Regency, and late mid-century interiors, particularly alongside brass, chrome, burlwood, and leather furnishings.
An uncommon surviving example distinguished by its exceptional veneer selection, unusually large scale, and clean Scandinavian form.
