Description
Early 19th century circular regency giltwood Convex Mirror. Mirror features a spread wing eagle perched atop a structure of rocks and a foliate pendant grouping on bottom. Giltwood balls on chains are suspended from the eagle's mouth. The patina on the gilt highlights the carvings of the acanthus leaves along with the gilt surrounding the entire front of the mirror. These mirrors were highly functional in a dimly lit room owing to their light-magnifying qualities. Convex mirrors also played an important role in the running of the English Regency households and were often placed above the dining room sideboard, allowing butlers to discreetly keep an eye on guests.
