Description
Roman Terracotta Oil Lamps, Set of Four, used as an alternative to candles, dating back to 2nd century A.D. These small and compact oil lamps commonly used olive oil as fuel, and had a wick placed in the opening on top. The lamps burned slowly and provided a steady light. Three of the oil lamps feature decorations including horse, birds and floral motifs. Lamps were common household items and were traded throughout the Roman Empire. Lamps are various round sizes from 2.25" to 3.75" in diameter x 2"H. A great example of items used in the daily Roman routines of the time.
