A rare and exquisitely preserved mid-19th century hand woven Kashmiri shawl from Northwest India, showcasing a richly detailed paisley pattern in shades of red, ivory, black, and green. Woven with exceptional skill in the Kashmir region, this textile represents the origin of the iconic motif that would later inspire generations of European design.
Referred to as both "Paisley" and "Piano" shawls, authentic hand woven Kashmiri pieces like this are far more scarce than their later 19th-century machine-woven counterparts produced in Paisley, Scotland. While those European versions gained immense popularity"”especially after Queen Victoria famously wore them"”this original Indian textile embodies the artistic and cultural roots of the tradition, making it a museum-worthy piece of wearable art.
