Description
A striking studio pottery bowl signed Newsom, attributed to California ceramicist Don Newsom. Active from the 1960s through the 1980s, Newsom was known for his gestural brushwork and Japanese-influenced forms rooted in the Mingei tradition of functional folk craft. This piece likely dates to the 1970s.
The cream-toned interior features bold, calligraphic black brushstrokes accented with earthy rust and moss green, suggestive of abstracted foliage or windblown branches. The decoration is enclosed within a loosely painted circle, evoking the ensÅ, a Zen symbol of the beauty found in imperfection. The exterior is glazed in soft celadon gray, with a dark, textured rim that adds contrast and definition. Hand-thrown on a wheel, the bowl retains spiral ridges underneath and is signed "Newsom" in graphite. While it could be used as a shallow serving vessel, it is best appreciated as a decorative centerpiece.
14.25" in diameter, and 3.25" high.
