Description
Here is a charming antique Japanese lidded porcelain box dating to the late Meiji–TaishÅ period (circa 1890–1920). The box is beautifully hand-painted with playful monkey figures set among cascading wisteria vines, a traditional Japanese motif symbolizing longevity and seasonal renewal. The artwork is detailed and expressive, with fine line work and soft shading throughout.
The lid is topped with a porcelain finial that is painted with rich gold gilt, and the edges are finished with delicate applied gold decoration, typical of higher-quality Japanese export porcelain from this era. A red square seal mark appears on the underside, a common studio mark used on Meiji–TaishÅ period pieces. Originally made as a decorative presentation or incense/potpourri box, this piece works beautifully today as a vanity box, jewelry box, or simply as a decorative accent on a shelf or tabletop.
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Overall, great antique condition. Wear to the base and light rubbing to the gilt details, consistent with age and use. No major chips or cracks noted. This only adds to the character of a piece that has been enjoyed for well over a century.
