Antique English Yellowware Mixing Bowl with Blue Seaweed Decoration, Circa 1840s

A visually striking and decoratively appealing example of mid-19th century English yellowware, this substantial mixing bowl combines the warm, honey-toned yellowware body with a boldly executed blue seaweed decoration that gives the piece an immediate and commanding decorative presence. The seaweed motif "” rendered in a crisp white band encircling the bowl's exterior and flanked by two strong black bands below "” is one of the most beloved and recognizable decorative traditions in English country ceramics, its fluid, organic forms providing a perfect counterpoint to the clean geometry of the banding.
