Description
Antique English Yellowware Mixing Bowl with Blue Seaweed Decoration, Circa 1840s
A visually striking and decoratively appealing example of mid-19th century English yellowware, this substantial mixing bowl combines the warm, honey-toned yellowware body with a boldly executed blue seaweed decoration that gives the piece an immediate and commanding decorative presence. The seaweed motif "” rendered in a crisp white band encircling the bowl's exterior and flanked by two strong black bands below "” is one of the most beloved and recognizable decorative traditions in English country ceramics, its fluid, organic forms providing a perfect counterpoint to the clean geometry of the banding.
The blue seaweed decoration is particularly striking against the warm yellowware ground, the cool blue and white of the decorated band playing beautifully against the rich honey tone of the body in a color combination that is as fresh and appealing today as when this bowl left the English pottery nearly 180 years ago. At 12 inches across and 5¾ inches tall this is a generous and impressively scaled bowl with considerable shelf and display presence "” exactly the kind of bold, graphic country ceramic object that looks spectacular in a farmhouse kitchen, on a Welsh dresser, or as part of a collection of early English pottery.
A crack and bruise to the bottom of the bowl and two foot rim chips are honestly noted condition considerations that are entirely consistent with the working life of a heavy use kitchen mixing bowl of this age, and are appropriately reflected in the asking price. The decorated exterior displays beautifully and the bowl presents as a strong and characterful decorative piece.
