Provenance: Preserved by the artist’s descendants
Originally from Limousin but raised in Algeria, Jean-Louis PAGUENAUD (1876-1952) was trained at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Limoges and at the Académie Julian where he is said to have been a student of Bouguereau. Throughout his life, he maintained a passion for travel and sunny countries: the Basque Country, Spain, Asia, the West Indies, Africa, North Africa, Polynesia, etc.
In 1922, he was appointed official painter of the Navy. Paul Valéry nicknamed him "The admiral of painters, the painter of admirals". The Musée de la Marine preserves several works by this brilliant colorist.
