Description
Keywords: David Shterenberg, David Petrovich Shterenberg, Russian Painting, Still Life, Fruit Bowl, Bottle, Oil On Panel, Wood Panel, Modernist Painting, Russian Modernism, Signed Painting, Table, Wine, Bowl
Summary:
David Petrovich Shterenberg still life oil painting on wood panel depicting a fruit bowl, black bottle, and white cloth arranged on a round pedestal table. The composition is set against a bold red-orange ground with a blue drape at upper left. Signed lower left and presented in a frame.
While in Paris, Shterenberg became acquainted with Picasso, Modigliani, and Chagall. He studied with Fauvist painter Kees van Dongen and took part in discussions on the avant-garde with Parisian artists and intellectuals at the Café de la Rotonde. Absorbing these ideas, he developed a style that distilled objects to their essential character rather than fully deconstructing them. In his work, space often feels both flat and deep, color shifts between observed reality and expressive invention, and forms are sharpened and geometricized without fully entering Cubist fragmentation. Some passages also reflect the structural influence of Cézanne. These elements are brought together through a disciplined, elegant composition that gives the painting strength through its apparent simplicity.
(Presents well with age-related wear, expected surface wear, scattered abrasions, and some areas of rubbing visible throughout. Signature partially hidden behind frame)
Measurement: Visible: 28 x 19 1/4 in. (71.1 x 48.9 cm.), Frame: 36 x 27 1/2 in. (91.4 x 69.9 cm.) approx
This is a NO RESERVE AUCTION: there are no hidden or confidential reserves, all acceptable bidding commences at the online START PRICE.
