Description
This image was captured during Curtis’s 1927 voyage to the Arctic on the power schooner Nellie Juan. It depicts the unique dwellings and skin boats (umiaks) of the Inupiat people on Little Diomede Island, situated in the middle of the Bering Strait.Extreme Scarcity: Volume 20 had the smallest distribution of the entire series. Because of the onset of the Great Depression, very few complete sets were ever delivered, making individual plates from this volume significantly rarer than those from the more common early-1900s portfolios.Technical Mastery: The composition showcases the scale of the rocky, steep terrain against the fragile, ingenious structures of the village, rendered with the deep, warm tonal range of the original copperplate process. Measures 12.5 x 9.5
