Description
Crafted in the 1880s by the renowned Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company, Soldate Spartiate was originally designed as a kerosene lamp but is now electrified for modern use.
This sculptural lamp is made from patinated metal that has been artfully painted to accentuate its dramatic composition and classical detail. The piece is heavily inspired by a sculpture by French neoclassical artist Jean-Pierre Cortot, and it captures a moment of both physical exhaustion and defiant triumph.
The figure depicted is a Spartan soldier"”muscular, battle-worn, and heroic. He is shown collapsed on the ground, his torso arched and taut as if summoning the last reserves of his strength. One arm braces his weight against the earth, while the other thrusts a golden torch skyward"”an electrified element that now serves as the lamp's light source.
The soldier's body is rendered in a silver-toned finish, which catches and reflects the light in a way that highlights his sculpted musculature. A brown cape is draped loosely over his hip, cascading down in realistic folds and partially pooling beneath him. At his side lie his shield and sword, emblematic of his warrior identity, now temporarily set aside in this moment of dramatic pause.
