Description
A rare and beautifully preserved pair of antique Chinese wedding nesting baskets, crafted from woven wicker and bamboo and mounted within their original iron carrying frames.
Traditionally used for carrying and presenting food, gifts, and ceremonial offerings, baskets like these played an important role in both everyday life and special occasions. During weddings and festivals, elaborately prepared foods and gifts were transported in tiered baskets similar to these, symbolizing abundance, hospitality, and prosperity.
Each basket is constructed with finely woven bamboo and reinforced with dark metal bands, all suspended within arched iron carrying frames with decorative handles. The result is both functional and sculptural, with wonderful texture and patina developed over time.
The baskets retain beautiful age, surface wear, and warm coloration, giving them a strong presence as decorative objects. Displayed together, they make a striking statement in an entryway, kitchen, or dining space and work wonderfully in interiors that blend antiques with organic materials.
A rare matching pair, increasingly difficult to find intact with their original handles and frames.
