Description
Original stone lithograph by Stow Wengenroth (American, 1906 to 1978), one of the foremost American lithographers of the twentieth century and a National Academician. Quintessential Wengenroth subject depicting a Down East Maine working harbor at low tide, with weathered shingled fish houses and a small derrick, stacks of slat-sided lobster traps along the wharf, dories pulled up on the rocky tidal shore, and a glimpse of dark coniferous shoreline beyond. Rendered in Wengenroth's signature dense tonal range, from velvet black through silvery middle tones to luminous highlights, drawn directly on stone and printed in the New York studio of George C. Miller. Pencil signed "Stow Wengenroth" in the lower right margin. Inscribed by the artist in pencil in the lower left margin with a personal dedication, indicating this is a presentation impression given by the artist to a private recipient.
