Description
Founded in 1922, the Shunyo-kai (Spring Sun Society) is a celebrated Japanese Western-style (yÅga) painting organization. It was established by a group of rebellious artists who left the Japan Art Institute to pioneer a freer, more individualized approach to Western-style painting in Japan. Shunyo-kai emphasizes individuality and originality, and is unique for allowing a wide variety of works, including oil paintings, prints, ink paintings, drawings, and newspaper illustrations. Annual exhibitions are held at venues such as the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.
