Large Black Forest Red Deer Trophy on Carved Plaque - Germany 1920

An antique trophy of the unequal 10-pointer red deer (Cervus elaphus) from Salem Castle in southern Germany. Shot by a member of the princely family of Baden in 1920. Mounted on a wooden plate with dark green varnish. The plaque bears the branded family coat of arms on the back.

Trophies are mementos from the hunted game, which are kept by the huntsmen as a souvenir or decorative item. For many centuries it was a tradition to collect trophies. Nowadays exactly these are becoming more and more popular as decorative highlights in hunting lodges.
