This Tingle Manufacturing Company percussion muzzleloading rifle is a single shot half stock firearm featuring a heavy octagonal barrel intended for target or sporting use. The action utilizes a side hammer percussion system. The rifle is stocked in walnut with a brass buttplate and an ornate brass trigger guard, complemented by a silver toned metal nose cap at the terminus of the forend. It is equipped with a blade front sight and an adjustable leaf rear sight mounted to the barrel flats. Key markings include the manufacturer stamp on the lock plate which reads TINGLE MFG. CO. SHELBYVILLE, IND. U.S.A. and the serial number NO 247 stamped on the top flat of the barrel near the breech. This firearm is missing its ramrod, though the two metal ramrod pipes remain attached beneath the barrel. The rifle is accompanied by a canvas and leather soft scabbard with a buckle closure. The barrel retains a faded bluing or browning with areas of significant surface oxidation, rust, and light pitting visible along the top and side flats. The lock plate and hammer show a mottled grey patina with minor surface oxidation. The walnut stock remains in good structural condition with various dings, scratches, and impressions consistent with age and field use. The brass furniture shows a medium aged patina. The action appears to function correctly with a firm hammer spring and positive engagement, though it has not been live fire tested. The canvas scabbard is well worn with staining and some fraying, while the leather components remain supple with intact stitching.
