Description
One antique Foster Bros professional meat cleaver, model 239. This heavy-duty tool is constructed with a broad, curved carbon steel blade and a full tang. The handle features two dark wood scales held in place by three large brass rivets. The wood handle scales are decorated with a series of small, notched indentations along the upper and lower edges. A circular hole is present at the upper corner of the blade to facilitate hanging. The blade bears several stamped marks on the left side. Centrally located is the maker mark reading SOLID STEEL, FOSTER BROS, TRADE, followed by an arrow symbol with a diamond center and the word MARK. The model number 2 3 9 is stamped on the blade closer to the handle. Blade length: 9 inches.
Condition
The cleaver is in good antique condition. The steel blade has developed a dark, mottled gray patina with visible surface oxidation and localized pitting. The cutting edge shows evidence of past sharpening and minor use wear. The wooden handle scales are well-worn with multiple scratches, surface compressions, and minor chipping at the end of the pommel. Green verdigris is visible around the brass rivets.
