PT-109 was the patrol torpedo boat commanded by future President John F. Kennedy during World War II. After the vessel was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in the Solomon Islands in August 1943, Kennedy and surviving crew members endured a dramatic survival ordeal before being aided by Australian coastwatcher Arthur Reginald Evans and local islanders. The PT-109 incident became one of the defining episodes of Kennedy’s wartime legacy and played a major role in shaping his public image during his political rise.
