Details:
John F. Kennedy White House typed letter signed by Priscilla Wear, dated March 7, 1962, on official The White House, Washington letterhead. Addressed to Miss Ellen Abbe Glenn of Arlington, Virginia, the letter acknowledges her request for an autographed photograph of President Kennedy. Wear writes, “Through the courtesy of Mr. Charles Bartlett, the President learned of your interest in obtaining an autographed picture. The President was happy to sign the enclosed photo which comes with his very best wishes.” The letter concludes with Wear’s bold ink signature above her typed title, Office of the President.
The correspondence documents the White House’s handling of requests for President Kennedy’s signed photographs and reveals that the request was facilitated by journalist and Kennedy confidant Charles Bartlett, one of the president’s closest personal friends. Letters accompanying presidentially signed photographs are uncommon survivors, particularly those identifying the individual who arranged the request. While the signed photograph referenced in the letter is no longer present, the letter itself provides excellent documentation of the White House’s response to a personal autograph request during the Kennedy administration.
Overall in very good condition with light expected age toning, standard mailing folds, and minor handling wear.
Priscilla Wear (1926–2022) served as President John F. Kennedy’s personal secretary and was among the most trusted members of his White House staff. She managed much of the president’s daily correspondence and coordinated requests for signed photographs and other presidential materials. Charles Bartlett (1921–2014) was a prominent journalist, longtime friend of President Kennedy, and the individual widely credited with introducing John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier. This letter offers an interesting glimpse into the personal and highly organized operation of the Kennedy White House during one of the most celebrated presidencies in American history.
