Appointed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Douglas became known for his strong civil libertarian views and influential opinions on free speech, privacy, and environmental conservation. He was an active and visible figure during the Kennedy era and remained one of the Court’s most recognizable justices through multiple presidential administrations.
