Before entering government service, he was President of the Ford Motor Company. During the Kennedy years he became one of the administration’s most trusted advisers, helping shape defense strategy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and other major Cold War confrontations. Following his government service, McNamara served as President of the World Bank from 1968 to 1981. His influence on American military policy and international affairs made him one of the most consequential public officials of the twentieth century.
