Details:
JFK commemorative First Day Cover, postmarked in Boston on May 29, 1964, signed by Gerald Ford along with nine prominent members of Congress who served during the Kennedy era. The cover bears the first-day issue Kennedy airmail stamp and represents an extraordinary gathering of political leaders from one of the most consequential periods in modern American history.
In addition to future President Gerald Ford, the cover is signed by House Majority Leader Hale Boggs, Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, House Majority Leader Carl Albert, Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield, Speaker of the House John W. McCormack, Senate Minority Whip Thomas H. Kuchel, Senator Russell Long, House Minority Whip Leslie C. Arends, and Senator Carl Hayden. Collectively, these men were among the most influential legislators in Washington during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, shaping major legislation involving civil rights, taxation, defense, and social policy.
Particularly notable is the presence of Speaker John McCormack, who succeeded to a higher place in the presidential line of succession following Kennedy’s assassination, as well as Hale Boggs, who later disappeared in a 1972 aircraft accident. The combination of signatures creates an impressive snapshot of congressional leadership during the transition from the Kennedy presidency to the Johnson administration.
