Angier Biddle Duke autographed JFK Memorial First Day Cover postmarked Boston, Massachusetts, May 29, 1964, honoring President John F. Kennedy. Duke signed the cover in blue ink, adding the inscription, “United States Ambassador Madrid - Spain,” identifying the diplomatic position he held at the time.

A member of one of America’s most prominent families, Duke served in numerous diplomatic and governmental roles throughout his distinguished career. Most notably for Kennedy collectors, he was appointed Chief of Protocol of the United States by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, becoming one of the administration’s most visible representatives during state visits, official ceremonies, and diplomatic functions. Following Kennedy’s assassination, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Duke as United States Ambassador to Spain, the office he references in his inscription on the present cover.

The JFK Memorial stamp issue of May 29, 1964, was one of the most significant commemorative releases in American postal history, issued only months after Kennedy’s death. The present cover is especially desirable due to Duke’s direct connection to the Kennedy administration and his prominent role in representing the United States during the Camelot era.
