Joan Bennett Kennedy (1936–2024) was the wife of Senator Edward M. Kennedy and a prominent member of the Kennedy family during one of the most turbulent periods in American political history. Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963, the Kennedy family received an outpouring of condolences from around the world. Printed acknowledgments such as this were issued to thank supporters for their messages, prayers, and expressions of sympathy. The accompanying envelope is particularly notable for its use of the 1964 John F. Kennedy memorial stamp, issued just months after the president’s death and one of the most iconic commemorative stamps in American postal history.
