Earl Warren family Christmas card, an original illustrated holiday greeting card measuring approximately 16 x 7.5 inches when opened. The festive card depicts Earl Warren, his wife Nina, their children, and numerous family pets riding through the night sky in Santa’s sleigh while delivering holiday wishes. Family members are individually identified within the artwork, creating a highly personal and engaging seasonal greeting from the future Chief Justice of the United States.
The charming illustration features Earl Warren dressed as Santa Claus leading a sleigh filled with the Warren family, accompanied by a team of reindeer and an assortment of beloved household pets. Across the bottom appears the holiday greeting, “All of us wish each of you a very Merry Christmas… and a happy New Year!” The artwork was created by illustrator Jim Warren and reflects the whimsical, family-centered style that characterized many of the Warren family’s privately distributed Christmas cards.
Unlike formal political correspondence, family Christmas cards provide a rare glimpse into the personal lives of prominent public figures. This example captures Warren during the height of his public career and offers an unusual and lighthearted contrast to the serious judicial and political responsibilities for which he would later become famous. The large format and attractive artwork make it especially desirable as a display piece.
Near fine condition.
Earl Warren (1891-1974) was an American statesman and jurist who served as Governor of California from 1943 to 1953 before becoming Chief Justice of the United States from 1953 to 1969. Under his leadership, the Supreme Court issued many of the most important decisions in American constitutional history, including Brown v. Board of Education. Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Warren was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to chair the Warren Commission, the official body charged with investigating the assassination. The Commission’s report became one of the most influential and debated government investigations in modern American history, ensuring Warren’s permanent place in the story of the Kennedy presidency and its tragic end.
