Clay Shaw original 6 x 10” black-and-white press photograph depicting two images of Shaw during the height of the controversial investigation conducted by New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The upper image shows Shaw speaking publicly, while the lower image captures him outside a government building surrounded by reporters and onlookers as the highly publicized case unfolded.
The reverse retains a period newspaper clipping and editorial notations identifying the subject and summarizing developments in the case. Clay Shaw (1913–1974) was a New Orleans businessman and former managing director of the International Trade Mart who became one of the most controversial figures connected to Kennedy assassination investigations. In 1967, Shaw was charged by District Attorney Jim Garrison with participating in a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy, becoming the only person ever brought to trial in connection with the assassination. After a lengthy and highly publicized proceeding, Shaw was acquitted by a jury in 1969. The case later became widely known through Garrison’s writings and the film “JFK,” ensuring Shaw’s enduring place in the history and debate surrounding one of America’s most examined historical events.
