Details:
Leon Panetta autographed White House letter as Chief of Staff to President Bill Clinton regarding correspondence from noted JFK assassination researcher Bruce Adamson, whose decades-long efforts focused on alleged intelligence community involvement in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Dated August 24, 1994, the letter is typed on official White House stationery and addressed to Adamson in Aptos, California.
In the letter, Panetta acknowledges Adamson’s submission concerning the Central Intelligence Agency, writing in part: “Given the information that you have provided regarding the Central Intelligence Agency, I believe that the Department of Justice is best equipped to address your concerns.” Panetta further advises that the material is being forwarded to Chip Sgro, the White House contact at the Department of Justice, and indicates that a member of the staff may contact Adamson in the future. Panetta signs the letter boldly in blue ink above his typed title as Chief of Staff.
The accompanying original White House mailing envelope is included and bears the White House return address and postal markings from Washington, D.C. Together, the items provide an interesting record of official government correspondence generated in response to one of the many citizen-led investigations and inquiries surrounding the assassination of President Kennedy.
Bruce Adamson became well known within JFK research circles for his extensive correspondence with government agencies and public officials regarding assassination-related theories and records. This letter reflects the continuing public interest in the Kennedy assassination more than three decades after the events of November 22, 1963, and illustrates how such inquiries were handled at the highest levels of government during the Clinton administration, an era that saw renewed attention given to assassination records and disclosure efforts.
Overall condition is very good. The letter exhibits light handling wear and expected mailing folds.
