Original period White House press release issued on November 23, 1963, containing President Lyndon B. Johnson’s remarks and proclamation establishing a National Day of Mourning for President John F. Kennedy. Measuring 8.5 x 14”, the mimeographed release was distributed by the Office of the White House Press Secretary and is titled, “Remarks of the President at Issuance of Proclamation of National Day of Mourning for John Fitzgerald Kennedy in the Fish Room.” Issued less than twenty-four hours after Kennedy’s assassination, the document represents one of the earliest official expressions of national grief from the new administration.
