This copy is inscribed to Benjamin A. Smith II, Harvard roommate of President John F. Kennedy, lifelong friend of the Kennedy family, and former United States Senator from Massachusetts. Smith’s relationship with the Kennedys stretched back to their undergraduate years at Harvard, where he and John F. Kennedy formed a lifelong friendship. Following Kennedy’s election to the presidency in 1960, Smith was appointed to succeed him in the United States Senate, remaining one of the family’s closest friends and trusted confidants for decades.
In Our Defense explores the enduring significance of the United States Bill of Rights through historical case studies and contemporary legal issues. Co-authored by Caroline Kennedy and attorney Ellen Alderman, the work reflects Kennedy’s longstanding interest in constitutional law, public service, and civic education, themes that have characterized much of her literary and public career.

Caroline Kennedy (b. 1957) is an attorney, author, diplomat, and the only surviving child of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Throughout her career she has championed education, constitutional literacy, and public service through numerous books and civic initiatives. She served as United States Ambassador to Japan from 2013 to 2017 and as United States Ambassador to Australia beginning in 2022, continuing her family’s longstanding tradition of public service.
