Robert F. Kennedy (1925–1968) served as United States Attorney General from 1961 to 1964 and as U.S. Senator from New York from 1965 until his death. Following the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy, he emerged as one of the leading political figures of the 1960s, advocating for civil rights, social justice, and opposition to the Vietnam War. Kennedy entered the 1968 presidential race and rapidly gained national momentum before being fatally shot in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, shortly after winning the California Democratic primary. His assassination marked one of the defining tragedies of modern American political history.
