Details:
The Professional: Lyndon B. Johnson by William S. White, fourth printing (1964), warmly inscribed and signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson to United States Senator Benjamin A. Smith II. On the title page, Johnson writes, “To Benjamin A. Smith - with best wishes,” followed by his distinctive signature in blue ink.
This personalized presentation copy was gifted to one of Johnson’s Senate colleagues during a pivotal period in American political history. Published in 1964, the book appeared during Johnson’s first full year as president following the assassination of John F. Kennedy and offers a contemporary examination of Johnson’s rise to power and political career. Inscribed presidential books presented directly to fellow United States Senators are highly desirable, particularly when the recipient possessed such a close personal connection to President Kennedy.
The recipient, Benjamin A. Smith II (1916–1991), was among John F. Kennedy’s closest lifelong friends. The two met while students at Harvard University and remained close throughout Kennedy’s political career and presidency. Following Kennedy’s election to the White House, Smith was appointed to fill JFK’s vacant United States Senate seat, serving as a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1960 to 1962. Smith occupied a unique place in American political history as both Kennedy’s Harvard roommate and the man selected to succeed him in the Senate.
The volume remains in good condition overall with its original dust jacket present. Expected handling wear, toning, and light age-related wear are present.
Provenance: From the estate of Benjamin A. Smith II, Harvard roommate and lifelong friend of President John F. Kennedy, former United States Senator from Massachusetts. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Benjamin A. Smith III documenting direct family ownership.
