Jack Ruby (1911–1967) was a Dallas nightclub owner who entered history on November 24, 1963, when he fatally shot Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy, in the basement of Dallas Police Headquarters. His actions, witnessed live on national television, became one of the most dramatic and controversial moments in American history. Ruby was convicted of murder in 1964, though his conviction was later overturned on appeal. He died of cancer in 1967 before a new trial could take place. This original Associated Press photograph documents one of Ruby’s later courtroom appearances during the prolonged legal battles that followed the Kennedy assassination.
