Details:
Richard J. Hughes autographed one-page typed letter signed as Governor of New Jersey, dated December 17, 1963, on official State of New Jersey Office of the Governor letterhead. Addressed to Bernard J. Creighton, HM1, USNR, the letter thanks Creighton for assistance related to a trip to Guantanamo Bay and contains a poignant contemporary reference to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy just weeks earlier.
In part, Hughes writes:
“Due to the hectic days since my return from Jamaica brought about by the tragic death of President Kennedy, I have neglected to thank you for your kindness in helping to make possible my trip to Guantanamo Bay.”
The letter continues with Hughes expressing his appreciation and extending holiday wishes to the recipient.
Written less than one month after Kennedy’s assassination on November 22, 1963, the letter provides a firsthand contemporary reference to the disruption and turmoil experienced by public officials throughout the nation following the tragedy. Unlike retrospective accounts written years later, this correspondence captures the immediate aftermath of the assassination as it was being experienced in real time. Such references are particularly desirable as they document how the nation’s political leaders personally acknowledged and responded to one of the defining events of the twentieth century. The letter combines gubernatorial, presidential, and Cold War-era military associations through its references to Guantanamo Bay, the United States Naval Reserve, and the assassination of President Kennedy.
Overall condition is good. The letter exhibits expected folds, scattered toning, light staining, and handling wear.
Richard Joseph Hughes (1909-1992) served as the 45th Governor of New Jersey from 1962 to 1970. A prominent Democratic politician, Hughes was governor during a transformative period in New Jersey history and became the first Roman Catholic elected to the office. His tenure coincided with the administration of President John F. Kennedy, and he was among the many state leaders whose work and public responsibilities were directly affected by the events surrounding Kennedy’s assassination. Following his governorship, Hughes served as Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, becoming the only individual in the state’s history to have held both positions. He remains one of New Jersey’s most influential twentieth-century political figures.
