Arthur L. Carlson autographed “In Memoriam John F. Kennedy” First Day Cover in black ink. The ArtCraft cachet features a memorial portrait of President Kennedy with the quotation, “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country…” Postmarked May 29, 1964, in Boston, Massachusetts, with a 5¢ John F. Kennedy memorial stamp.

Arthur L. Carlson was associated with the ceremonial military procession during the funeral of President John F. Kennedy and is remembered for leading the riderless horse “Black Jack” during the state funeral in Washington, D.C., in November 1963. The image of the black horse with reversed boots in the stirrups became one of the most iconic and emotional symbols of Kennedy’s funeral ceremonies.
