Details:
A working archive relating to famed fashion designer Oleg Cassini and his celebrated professional relationship with First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Comprising original working materials, fashion reference files, magazine and newspaper clippings, correspondence, design sketches, and related ephemera, the archive offers a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind one of the most influential style collaborations of the twentieth century.
At the heart of the archive are numerous working documents used by Cassini and his studio during the Kennedy years, including typed wardrobe notes and fashion memoranda on Oleg Cassini letterhead, several bearing editorial notations. Accompanying these are multiple hand-drawn fashion sketches depicting dress concepts and silhouettes, period newspaper and magazine articles documenting Jacqueline Kennedy’s wardrobe and public appearances, photographs of the First Lady, and additional research and inspirational materials retained as part of the studio’s working files.
Also included is a facsimile reproduction of a handwritten note from Jacqueline Kennedy together with a typed letter attributed to Mrs. Kennedy. The typed letter bears the handwritten initials “JBK”; however, these initials appear to have been added by a secretary or member of the Cassini studio rather than by Jacqueline Kennedy herself.
Oleg Cassini (1913-2006) served as Jacqueline Kennedy’s principal couturier from the beginning of the Kennedy administration, designing many of the First Lady’s most recognizable ensembles and helping shape the visual identity of Camelot. His elegant, minimalist aesthetic became synonymous with the Kennedy White House and influenced American fashion throughout the 1960s. While the archive does not contain original Jacqueline Kennedy signatures, it preserves an exceptional body of authentic studio material documenting the working relationship between Cassini and the First Lady.
Overall good vintage condition with expected age wear throughout. Individual pieces exhibit varying degrees of toning, edge wear, folds, editorial notations, and handling wear consistent with active studio use. An outstanding archival grouping documenting the creative process behind one of the most iconic fashion partnerships of the twentieth century.
