Details:
John F. Kennedy 1961 Presidential Inauguration invitation packet from the personal collection of Benjamin A. Smith II, Harvard roommate of President Kennedy, lifelong friend of the Kennedy family, and former United States Senator from Massachusetts. This complete official packet was prepared for invited guests attending the historic inauguration of the 35th President of the United States on January 20, 1961, and remains intact with its original components.
The archive includes the official engraved inauguration invitation, the ribbon-bound Inauguration Ceremonies Program, the original mailing envelope from the Congress of the United States, the original protective tissue paper inserts, and the pair of official photographic portrait inserts of President John F. Kennedy and Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, each printed with facsimile signatures. Packets of this nature were distributed only to invited guests and represent one of the most recognizable ceremonial souvenirs from one of the most significant inaugurations in American history.
The inauguration of John F. Kennedy marked the beginning of the “New Frontier” and introduced a new generation of American leadership. Despite bitter winter weather and heavy snowfall in Washington, D.C., Kennedy delivered one of the most celebrated inaugural addresses ever given, concluding with the immortal words, “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” The ceremony also marked the swearing-in of Lyndon B. Johnson as Vice President, who would assume the presidency following Kennedy’s assassination less than three years later.
As one of President Kennedy’s closest lifelong friends, Benjamin A. Smith II received this packet directly as an invited guest to the inauguration. Smith and Kennedy first met as roommates at Harvard University and remained close throughout Kennedy’s political career. Their enduring friendship continued through the White House years, making this a particularly desirable example with exceptional personal provenance.
Good condition overall with light expected toning, scattered handling wear, and minor soiling to the mailing envelope.
