John F. Kennedy assassination UPI teletype dispatches measuring approximately 8.5 x 8.75 in., issued on November 24, 1963, comprising three separate United Press International bulletins printed on a single sheet. The dispatches document the worldwide response to President Kennedy’s assassination, including international memorial services, prayers across Europe, and the arrival of foreign dignitaries traveling to Washington to attend the president’s funeral.
The primary dispatch, UPI-40 (Prayers), reports that Europeans united in prayer for President Kennedy, with churches across the continent holding memorial services and clergy of numerous faiths honoring the slain American president. It details requiem Masses in Yugoslavia, special services throughout West Germany, nationwide mourning in Spain, and memorial observances at American embassies and military installations across Europe. The bulletin further notes that Spanish Vice President Gen. Agustín Muñoz Grandes was en route to Washington to represent Spain at the funeral, while thousands of Spaniards signed books of condolence at the American Embassy in Madrid.
Appearing above and below the principal report are two additional correspondent bulletins. UPI-39 announces the expected arrival of Queen Frederika of Greece at Washington Dulles International Airport to attend the funeral ceremonies, while UPI-41 reports that King Baudouin of Belgium, accompanied by representatives of Luxembourg and the European Communities, was likewise expected to arrive in Washington. Together, the three dispatches provide a remarkable contemporary record of the extraordinary international response to President Kennedy’s death and the unprecedented gathering of world leaders for his state funeral.
Very good condition overall.
The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, prompted an unparalleled global outpouring of grief. Heads of state, royalty, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens from around the world united in mourning, while representatives from more than 90 nations traveled to Washington for the state funeral. Original UPI teletypes documenting these international reactions were transmitted in real time to newspaper offices and remain scarce historical artifacts preserving the world’s immediate response to one of the defining events of the twentieth century.
