John F. Kennedy assassination UPI teletype dispatch measuring approximately 8.5 x 3.25 in., issued on November 24, 1963, reporting from Dunganstown, County Wexford, Ireland, the ancestral home of the Kennedy family, where relatives and neighbors gathered to mourn the death of President John F. Kennedy. Designated UPI-36 (Ireland), the dispatch captures the deeply personal response of Kennedy’s Irish family in the days following the assassination.
The bulletin recounts that Kennedy’s Irish cousins attended a special Requiem Mass at nearby Dallycullane, held in the centuries-old church where the president’s great-grandfather, Patrick Kennedy, had been baptized. The local curate delivered an emotional sermon, declaring, “Never again will we see Jack Kennedy’s smiling face, hear his voice, or shake his hand. Almighty God has called him to Himself.” Following the service, local residents gathered to offer their condolences, while the teletype poignantly observes that the excitement and celebration that had filled Dunganstown during Kennedy’s historic visit to Ireland only months earlier had given way to silence and sorrow.
Very good condition overall.
President John F. Kennedy’s June 1963 visit to Ireland was one of the most memorable international trips of his presidency, during which he returned to the homeland of his ancestors and was greeted by enormous crowds throughout the country. His assassination just five months later profoundly affected the Irish people, particularly the residents of County Wexford, whose close ties to the Kennedy family made the loss especially personal. Original UPI teletypes documenting these international reactions remain scarce historical artifacts preserving the world’s immediate response to one of the defining events of the twentieth century.
