Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis original 6.75 x 9” black-and-white press photograph depicting Jackie smiling beside John F. Kennedy Jr. during a Mediterranean cruise aboard the Onassis family yacht Christina. The image captures a relaxed and candid moment between mother and son during the family’s visit to Giardini di Messina, Sicily.
The original caption affixed to the reverse, dated June 22, 1971, notes that Mrs. Jacqueline Onassis, her husband Aristotle Onassis, and children John and Caroline Kennedy were touring the Mediterranean aboard the famed yacht Christina. The caption humorously references the young John F. Kennedy Jr.’s expression as the family made a port call in Sicily.
Near fine condition. Reverse retains the original June 22, 1971 news caption along with later Photofest archive labels.
The reverse caption reads in part: “Whatever the source of seeming perplexity for John F. Kennedy Jr., his mother, Mrs. Jacqueline Onassis, finds it highly amusing as they pay call at this island port…”
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1929–1994) remained one of the world’s most photographed and admired public figures following her years as First Lady. After marrying Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968, she divided her time between New York, Europe, and the family’s yacht Christina. John F. Kennedy Jr. (1960–1999), the son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy, grew up under extraordinary public attention and became one of the most recognizable members of America’s most famous political family. This candid 1971 photograph captures a rarely seen private family moment during the Onassis era of Jacqueline Kennedy’s life.
