Details:
Jacqueline Kennedy original reception invitation with matching admission card and original addressed mailing envelope for a reception honoring Mrs. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, held at the Deauville Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on August 27, 1964. The engraved invitation was issued by Under Secretary of State W. Averell Harriman and Mrs. Harriman, inviting the recipient to attend a reception for the former First Lady from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. The accompanying admission card specifies entry through the Morris Avenue entrance to the Deauville Hotel Ballroom. Also included is the original mailing envelope, postmarked New York, August 20, 1964, addressed to the invited guest in Detroit, Michigan.
Issued less than a year after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the invitation documents one of Jacqueline Kennedy’s most notable public appearances during the 1964 presidential campaign. Although she had largely withdrawn from public life following the tragedy in Dallas, Mrs. Kennedy made a limited number of appearances on behalf of President Lyndon B. Johnson and the Democratic Party.
Overall in very good condition.
Jacqueline Kennedy (1929–1994), later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, served as First Lady of the United States from 1961 until the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. Renowned for her grace, intelligence, and dedication to the preservation of American history and culture, she became one of the most admired women of the twentieth century. Her limited public appearances during the 1964 presidential campaign carried extraordinary symbolic importance, making invitations and memorabilia from these events highly desirable artifacts of the Kennedy era.
