Details:
Lee Harvey Oswald-related vintage 8 x 11” black-and-white wire service photograph depicting Dallas police examining the rifle recovered from the Texas School Book Depository following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The image shows a Dallas fingerprint expert holding the Mannlicher-Carcano rifle, identified as the weapon linked to Oswald, in one of the most widely circulated investigative photographs from the case.
The lower margin retains its original wire service caption, noting: “THE GUN—Police brandish rifle shortly after it was found near sniper’s perch in book depository…” and referencing subsequent analysis tying the weapon to Oswald, including fingerprint evidence. The photograph also bears period editorial border elements and handling marks consistent with newsroom use.
The verso features bold red grease pencil editorial markings and a “DATE USED” stamp (Nov. 2, 1983), indicating later archival or publication use.
Very good condition overall with light age-related wear.
Lee Harvey Oswald (1939–1963) was identified by investigators as the individual responsible for the assassination of John F. Kennedy, with this rifle serving as a central piece of physical evidence in the case.
