Details:
John Vernou “Black Jack” Bouvier III autographed check dated June 14, 1953, payable to his daughter Lee Canfield in the amount of $50.00. The check is signed “J.V. Bouvier” and is accompanied by Lee Canfield’s endorsement signature on the reverse, along with a photographic image identifying Bouvier in a 1923 reunion photograph.
Drawn on Eardley & Co., Private Bankers, New York, the check was issued just months before the September 1953 marriage of Jacqueline Bouvier and Senator John F. Kennedy. At the time, Lee was still using the surname Canfield from her first marriage to Michael Temple Canfield. The dual-signature nature of the piece creates an especially desirable Bouvier family artifact, linking Jacqueline Kennedy’s father and sister on a single document. Financial documents signed by Black Jack Bouvier are considerably scarcer than those of many Kennedy family members, and examples directly connected to Lee are seldom encountered. The accompanying photographic image further enhances the lot, providing a visual representation of the colorful Wall Street socialite whose daughters would become two of the most recognizable women of the twentieth century.
Overall condition is fine. The check displays expected banking stamps and cancellation markings. The accompanying photographic image exhibits expected age-related wear.
John Vernou Bouvier III (1891-1957), widely known as “Black Jack” Bouvier, was a New York stockbroker and socialite best remembered as the father of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Lee Radziwill. Known for his charm, athleticism, and larger-than-life personality, Bouvier became an enduring figure in Kennedy family history. Though he died before John F. Kennedy’s election to the presidency, his daughters would become internationally celebrated cultural icons, ensuring his lasting place within the story of America’s most famous political family.
Caroline Lee Bouvier Canfield Radziwill (1933-2019) was the younger sister of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and a prominent American socialite, public relations executive, actress, and interior designer. Following her marriage to publishing executive Michael Temple Canfield, she was known as Lee Canfield, the name appearing on the present check. She later married Polish aristocrat Prince Stanisław Albrecht Radziwiłł, acquiring the title Princess Radziwill and becoming an internationally recognized figure in fashion, society, and the arts. Throughout her life, Radziwill remained closely associated with the Kennedy family and was one of the most visible members of America’s most famous political dynasty.
