John F. Kennedy Memorial original 8 x 10” press photograph depicting the Kennedy Memorial Plaza in Dallas, Texas, located just blocks from Dealey Plaza and the site of President Kennedy’s assassination. The image, dated October 19, 1983, was distributed to the San Francisco Examiner and shows visitors walking beside architect Philip Johnson’s striking open-air memorial. A newspaper clipping affixed to the reverse references preparations for the twentieth anniversary observance of Kennedy’s death and discusses the city’s evolving efforts to commemorate his legacy. Editorial notations, reference markings, and newsroom stamps remain present on the reverse.
Fine condition.
The John F. Kennedy Memorial was dedicated in Dallas in 1970 as the city’s official tribute to the late president. Designed by noted architect Philip Johnson, the monument consists of a roofless white concrete structure intended as a symbolic space for reflection and remembrance. Situated near Dealey Plaza, the memorial became a focal point for annual commemorations and public reflection on the events of November 22, 1963. By the twentieth anniversary in 1983, civic leaders were increasingly emphasizing Kennedy’s life and legacy rather than the tragedy of his assassination, a shift reflected in the contemporary newspaper article preserved on the reverse of this photograph.
