John F. Kennedy memorial Mass invitation measuring 4.875 x 7.25”, accompanied by its original mailing envelope addressed to Senator Benjamin A. Smith II and his wife Barbara Smith at their Gloucester, Massachusetts residence, “Sidelight.” Issued by the Kennedy family in 1983, the invitation commemorates the twentieth anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination.

The elegantly printed invitation reads in part:

“The Kennedy Family invites you to join them in celebrating a Mass in joyful remembrance of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy on Tuesday, the twenty-second of November Nineteen hundred and eighty-three at ten o’clock, Holy Trinity Church, Thirty-sixth and N Streets, Northwest, Washington, District of Columbia.”

The accompanying envelope bears the printed return address of The Kennedy Family, P.O. Box 1501, Washington, D.C. 20013 and remains addressed in manuscript to “Honorable & Mrs. Benjamin Smith” at their Gloucester home. Postmarked Washington, D.C., November 2, 1983, the envelope provides an important association between the Kennedy family and one of President Kennedy’s closest lifelong friends.

This invitation originates from the estate of Benjamin A. Smith II, one of John F. Kennedy’s closest confidants. Smith and Kennedy were roommates at Harvard University and maintained a friendship that endured throughout Kennedy’s life. Following Kennedy’s election to the presidency, Smith was appointed to the United States Senate from Massachusetts to fill the vacancy created when Kennedy resigned his Senate seat.
