Glenn following the presentation of the NASA Distinguished Service Award Medal at Cape Canaveral, Florida. The image captures the President and America’s first astronaut to orbit the Earth during ceremonies held in front of Hangar S on February 23, 1962, just days after Glenn’s historic Friendship 7 mission.
Released by NASA on February 23, 1962, the original caption affixed to the reverse identifies the scene and notes that the photograph commemorates President Kennedy’s presentation of the agency’s highest honorary award to Glenn in recognition of his landmark orbital flight.
