John F. Kennedy original vintage Fabian Bachrach silver gelatin portrait photograph measuring approximately 8 x 10”, professionally mounted to an 8.5 x 11” backing board. The iconic image depicts Kennedy seated in a pinstripe suit and tie, captured in one of the most recognizable presidential portraits of the twentieth century. The photograph bears the printed Fabian Bachrach credit in the lower right corner.
Fabian Bachrach served as one of America’s foremost portrait photographers and became closely associated with the Kennedy family. His photographs of Senator and later President Kennedy were widely distributed by the campaign, the White House, and the national press, helping shape the enduring public image of JFK during his rise to the presidency. Few photographers are more closely identified with Kennedy than Bachrach, whose portraits remain among the definitive visual representations of the President.
This photograph originates from the estate of Benjamin A. Smith II, one of John F. Kennedy’s closest lifelong friends. Smith and Kennedy were roommates at Harvard University and maintained a friendship that endured throughout Kennedy’s life. Following Kennedy’s election to the presidency, Smith was appointed to the United States Senate from Massachusetts to fill the vacancy created when Kennedy resigned his Senate seat.
