Details:
John F. Kennedy original 7 x 5” color photograph by famed White House photographer Cecil Stoughton depicting President Kennedy standing barefoot along the shoreline at Hyannis Port watching his daughter, Caroline Kennedy, sail a model sailboat while conversing with a friend. Numerous sailboats dot the harbor in the background, capturing an intimate family moment during the summer of 1963. The reverse bears Stoughton’s original handwritten file notation, “C234-7-63,” along with the original Kodak paper watermark.
Near fine condition.
As the first official White House photographer, Cecil Stoughton enjoyed unprecedented access to President Kennedy, documenting both the administration’s defining historic moments and its most intimate family scenes. Unlike the formal images produced for the press, photographs such as this capture the relaxed atmosphere of the Kennedy family’s time at Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, where the President frequently escaped the demands of Washington.
Provenance: From the personal collection of Benjamin A. Smith II (1916-1991), former United States Senator from Massachusetts, Harvard roommate of President John F. Kennedy, and lifelong friend of the Kennedy family. The photograph remained in Smith’s personal collection until descending directly through the family.
