John F. Kennedy original 3.75 x 8” Associated Press press photograph depicting the President-elect aboard his aircraft while reviewing the draft of his inaugural address during the flight to Washington, D.C., on January 19, 1961, the day before his inauguration as the 35th President of the United States. Kennedy is captured smiling while holding the prepared text of the speech that would soon become one of the most celebrated addresses in American history.
The reverse retains the original newspaper clipping and editorial markings identifying the image, reading in part: “President-elect John F. Kennedy… looks up from scanning the draft of his speech for Friday’s inaugural, as his plane carries him from New York to Washington. Mr. Kennedy will be sworn in as the 35th United States president in ceremonies on Friday.” Also present are period newsroom date stamps from January 19, 1961, further documenting the photograph’s use by the press.
Taken just one day before the inauguration, the photograph captures Kennedy making final preparations for the speech that introduced the ideals of the “New Frontier” and concluded with the immortal challenge, “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”
Very good condition overall with expected editorial handling wear.
John F. Kennedy (1917–1963) served as the 35th President of the United States from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. His inaugural address remains one of the most influential political speeches ever delivered, setting the tone for an administration defined by the Peace Corps, the Space Race, civil rights initiatives, and American leadership during the Cold War. Behind-the-scenes photographs documenting the preparation of that historic speech offer an uncommon glimpse into a pivotal moment in American history.
