Details:
John F. Kennedy’s personally owned white Brioni Roma dress shirt from the wardrobe of the 35th President of the United States, accompanied by exceptional provenance tracing its ownership to Mary B. Gallagher, President Kennedy’s longtime personal secretary and executive assistant. Constructed of fine white cotton with French cuffs, the shirt retains its original Brioni Roma label, internal collar stay, period laundry band, and the original Hantman’s Auctioneers lot tag from the landmark John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Memorabilia Collection auction held on July 19, 2003, where it was offered as Lot 170.
Among President Kennedy’s preferred shirtmakers during his presidency was the renowned Italian tailoring house Brioni Roma, whose impeccably tailored shirts and suits reflected the sophisticated style that became synonymous with the Kennedy White House. While Kennedy’s public image projected effortless elegance, every element of his wardrobe was carefully selected, helping establish a distinctly modern presidential appearance that continues to influence menswear more than six decades later. Personal garments from Kennedy’s wardrobe remain among the rarest and most desirable categories of presidential memorabilia, offering an intimate connection to the daily life of one of America’s most iconic leaders.
The shirt is accompanied by its original Hantman’s auction lot tag and catalog description identifying it as “John F. Kennedy’s Dress Shirt” and noting its provenance as the Property of M.B. Gallagher, with an auction estimate of $200–300. Mary B. Gallagher served as President Kennedy’s personal secretary throughout his administration and was one of his closest and most trusted White House aides. Her office was located immediately adjacent to the Oval Office, where she managed the President’s daily schedule, correspondence, appointments, and countless aspects of his official duties. Following the assassination of President Kennedy, Gallagher carefully preserved a number of personal effects from her years of service, making artifacts originating from her collection especially desirable for their direct White House provenance.
The presence of the original laundry band further enhances the historical appeal of the shirt, preserving it in much the same manner as it would have been returned from the White House laundry during Kennedy’s presidency. Together with the original auction tag and Hantman’s catalog page, the shirt represents a well-documented and highly desirable example of President Kennedy’s personal wardrobe.
Accompanying the lot is an extensive 15-page provenance, authentication, and research report prepared by Michael and Fredericka Lam examining the shirt’s provenance, physical characteristics, Brioni Roma brand history, President Kennedy’s wardrobe and clothing preferences, Mary Barelli Gallagher’s ownership, the documented chain of custody, the 2003 Hantman’s auction, historical comparisons to other Kennedy garments, auction records, market history, and supporting historical sources. The report also includes a detailed addendum discussing physical observations made during the examination of the garment and recommendations for future forensic analysis.
