Details:
John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy original Type I silver gelatin photograph measuring 9 x 12”, depicting the President and First Lady seated together in an intimate White House setting. The image captures the Kennedys during the height of the Camelot era and was taken by renowned photographer Mark Shaw, whose access to the Kennedy family produced some of the most iconic and personal photographs of the administration.
Of particular significance, the verso bears a lengthy contemporary inscription in the hand of photographer Mark Shaw reading: “Private Print © Mark Shaw - Not for Publication - for Gov. Harold Hughes - an unpublished photo which I think will never be released.” The inscription identifies the print as a privately prepared presentation copy intended for Iowa Governor Harold Hughes and further states Shaw’s belief that the image would remain unpublished.
Mark Shaw enjoyed extraordinary access to President and Mrs. Kennedy, photographing both their public duties and private lives. His images helped define the visual legacy of the Kennedy White House and remain among the most celebrated photographs associated with the Kennedy presidency. The present photograph offers a quiet and candid portrayal of the First Couple, reflecting the elegance and intimacy that became synonymous with the Camelot years.
Near fine condition with some slight age wear to the edges and corners, including more moderate wear along the lower corners. The image itself remains strong with excellent contrast and presentation.
Mark Shaw (1921-1969) was one of America’s foremost photographers and a longtime contributor to magazines including Life, Harper’s Bazaar, and Mademoiselle. Best remembered for his extensive photographic work with President John F. Kennedy and the Kennedy family, Shaw produced many of the defining images of the Kennedy era. His access to the White House and personal relationship with the family allowed him to create a uniquely intimate visual record of one of the most important political families in American history.
